MY JOURNEY AS AN EVENT-PRENEUR
MY JOURNEY AS AN EVENT-PRENEUR
You know, if someone had told me years ago that my simple passion for making people's events beautiful would involved waking up midnights working on the laptop.
Crafting detailed proposals for corporate organizations/multinational corporations, I would have laughed and said, "My friend, you don't know what you're saying."
But here am I today, not as my people fondly say "ya na aikin kanopi ne"
(he does canopy works).
It started small, very small. I was that person who couldn't attend any event without mentally rearranging the decorations.
"Ah, if na me plan this thing," I would whisper to myself, "see how fine it for be."
I remembered stepping out of the lectures to go and arrange a venue for seminar then at ABU, Zaria "just for money."
Little did I know that those whispers and determination to earned a living were seeds of something bigger growing inside me.
I remembered following my boss to go decorating neighbors' children's birthday parties while in secondary school. The balloons, the colorful plitting on the walls and plenty of creativity.
The joy in those children's eyes, the satisfaction of their parents - that was my first payment, even before the small change they pressed into my palms for a cup of "garri" that year.
I now realized that event planning in Nigeria is not just about making things look pretty.
It's serious business.
The event industry in Nigeria, is not child's play. It's one of the most viable industries where real wealth can be built.
Just picture this, every day, someone is getting married, celebrating a milestone, launching a product, hosting a conference.
The demand for events never stops.
But let me tell you, the journey of building an event business that attracts corporate clients and multinationals? It's not beans, is an entirely different game on its own.
I remembered my first proposal for a corporate client. I spent 12 hours writing what I thought was the most brilliant proposal ever created.
They didn't even reply me. That rejection stung, but it taught me something valuable - there's a difference between planning Joy's wedding reception and coordinating a three-day international conference for 500 executives.
Some days, I spend 15 to 20 hours researching, writing proposals, learning new technologies, understanding compliance requirements.
Today, as I continue researching, learning, and building my capabilities, I know I'm preparing for something bigger.
The truth is, I haven't clinched that major multinational deal yet. But I can feel it coming.
Every rejection is making my proposal stronger. Every event covered is building my portfolio. Every late night spent learning is adding to my expertise.
What I've discovered is that as Nigerian event planners, we have something special. We understand celebration like few cultures do.
We know how to make people feel special, how to create atmosphere, how to turn ordinary spaces into memorable experiences.
Combining that natural gift with international standards, corporate professionalism, and cutting-edge technology; you have a formula for success that can compete anywhere in the world.
If you're reading this and you have a passion for events, don't underestimate the power of this industry.
It's not just about balloons, canopies, DJs, photography and cakes anymore. It's about creating experiences that drive business results, build brands, and connect people across the globe.
The event industry in Nigeria is waiting for professionals like you who understand both our cultural diversity, strengths and international standards.
